After the recent vote on the supplemental appropriations bill on May 24th, essentially stripping the bill of its short-term timetable for bringing the troops home from Iraq, and giving the Administration everything it demanded to continue the war, we did some research on recall of our U.S. Senators and Representatives who failed to stand firm, in the face of the President's veto, on the bill passed earlier by the Congress.
When we did the research on this project, we discovered to our astonishment that our Constitution does not provide for recall of US Congress people. It was in the original draft and was vehemently fought over and taken out of the final version that was signed and ratified. So there is no official way to recall national representatives. A few states allow for recall of state officials in their constitutions, but not the national ones.
So our only recourse is a people's petition asking these elected US Senators and Representatives to step aside so we can elect someone who will truly represent us. The petitions that we are using are unofficial and will not force their resignation or even get them to honorably step down. There is no law behind it.
However, if enough petitions can be signed and sent in to them in a steady stream, we are counting on getting their attention with our strong wording, so when the funding bill comes up for a vote again in September, they will have a better idea of just how sincere we are about ending this war, and possibly at that point they will vote the will of the majority of Americans and stop the funding for it.
